In a riveting lecture, Francis Fukuyama, FSI's new Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow resident in CDDRL, addressed "What is Development?" A prolific author, who has written widely on democracy, governance, and the international political economy, Fukuyama is a "fiercely independent policy intellectual," said CDDRL Director Larry Diamond. Choosing to focus on the problem of development as an integrated whole, Fukuyama emphasized that "political development is a separate process unto itself-- it is related to economic and social development, but it is not part of a seamless modernization process and has to be understood on its own terms."
