In May 2026, the Stanford Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) entered into a formal collaboration with the Journal of Democracy, one of the world’s leading publications on the theory and practice of democracy. Through the partnership, CDDRL will support the production of the Journal’s quarterly print issues and expanding digital content, while creating new opportunities for faculty, researchers, and students to contribute to its work.
The Journal of Democracy, a quarterly print magazine comprising long-form essays as well as regular, online-only essays, seeks two undergraduate student employees to support its editorial work during the fall quarter. Candidates should have a background in political science or a related field and strong writing and proofreading skills, be detail-oriented, and have a genuine interest in democracy, human rights, and global affairs. Familiarity with Microsoft Word is required, and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style is desired. This position involves approximately 5-10 hours per week, scheduled flexibly around class schedules.
Responsibilities may include:
- Fact-checking the Journal’s quarterly essays and their references
- Proofreading Journal essays prior to their publication, using the Chicago Manual of Style and the Journal’s style supplement
- Identifying potential documents for the Journal's Documents on Democracy (“Docs”) section
- Drafting introductory blurbs for Docs.
- Photo research for the Journal’s website
- Assisting with other editorial tasks as needed
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with the Journal's editors, to see how a leading scholarly publication is produced, and to gain firsthand familiarity with contemporary debates about democracy worldwide.
