The Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law is pleased to welcome Stanislav Markus as a Visiting Scholar for the Spring 2023 Quarter. He is an Associate Professor of International Business at the University of South Carolina and an Associate at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard.

Prof. Markus works on state-business relations and is broadly interested in the political economy of development. His projects explore property rights protection, oligarchs, corporate social responsibility, lobbying, corruption, state capacity, and institution building.

During his time at Stanford, Prof. Markus will be conducting research for his book project, "Tycoon Politics in the Developing World." The project will explore how big business owners engage politically in developing countries, and the consequences of their engagement for democracy. The study leverages his theoretical background in the political economy of development and in management research on nonmarket strategy, as well as his original datasets on the political activities of big business and popular support for such activities.

"Stan’s impressive research on state-business relations and the political economy of development in Russia, Ukraine, and beyond has made him an expert in his field,” said Kathryn Stoner, Mosbacher Director of CDDRL. “We are very happy to have him join our community of scholars and look forward to the insights he will bring to our work."
