Honors College 2026 Day 1: Sharpening Our Research in the Nation’s Capital

This is the first story in a series of blog posts written by the Fisher Family Honors Program class of 2027 detailing their experiences in Washington, D.C., for CDDRL's annual Honors College.

I couldn’t imagine a better way to write a senior honors thesis.

On paper, CDDRL is an incredible program: weekly cohort mentoring starting in the spring of junior year, one-on-one guidance, and a trip to D.C. with our professors to meet officials and policy leaders at RAND, Anthropic, the National Endowment for Democracy, the Journal of Democracy, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee… the list goes on.

Our honors college, a fully funded week-long visit in DC to bond with our cohort and visit various intellectual and policy institutions around the nation’s capital, started off incredibly strong. On Monday morning, we met with and learned from William J. Dobson, co-editor of the Journal of Democracy, and Damon Wilson, president and CEO of the National Endowment for Democracy — two organizations working to bolster democratic literacy and track global democratic changes. For a cohort of students intent on studying and strengthening democratic resilience around the world, these two meetings were unparalleled. They set the tone for the trip and gave us insight into how our scholarship can both make a difference and transform into real-world opportunities after Stanford.

The day continued with a visit to the Center for European Policy Analysis, where we spoke with the think tank's Vice President about democratic and economic decline in Europe and with two experts at the Brookings Institution about security, strategy, technology, and U.S. congressional efficacy. The opportunity to speak with these thought leaders and ask questions about our own research is exactly why I chose to complete my honors thesis under the Center for Democracy, Development and Rule of Law: these introductions and conversations undeniably pushed forward my thesis’s progress, challenged my prior assumptions about my topic, and encouraged me to think more deeply about my research’s democratic and global implications.

I was excited about the site visits, and I learned so much from them. But what made the trip especially memorable was being with my cohort the whole time. We had some of the best conversations — about the visits, politics, our lives, and whatever else came up. Somehow, our theses would find their way into those conversations too. Hearing everyone think out loud helped me see connections between topics that had seemed completely separate. It means a lot to go through this process with them.
