Who we are
The Program on Turkey at CDDRL is a platform for critical analysis and research on politics and society in Turkey. Through research projects, speaker events, and conferences, the Program seeks to provide and facilitate an understanding of the changing internal dynamics and external relations of the country in connection with global and regional developments and highlight potential agents and viable pathways for a democratic and sustainable future.

Ayça Alemdaroğlu
Ayça Alemdaroğlu is the Associate Director of the Program on Turkey and Research Scholar at CDDRL. She is a political sociologist, working on social inequality and political change in Turkey and the Middle East.

Burcu Karahan
Burcu Karahan specializes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries Ottoman Turkish literature. Her research focuses on the novel, issues of translation, sexuality, formation of masculine identities, and Westernization. She teaches Ottoman and contemporary Turkish literature in translation and Turkish cinema; and language courses on Ottoman Turkish, reading knowledge for Turkish, and translation.

Aron Rodrigue
Aron Rodrigue is a Professor of History and Daniel E. Koshland Professor in Jewish Culture and History. Professor Rodrigue is also serving as Burke Family Director, Bing Overseas Studies Program. He is the author of several books on Jewish and Ottoman History.

Kabir Tambar
Kabir Tambar is an Associate Professor at Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. He is a sociocultural anthropologist, working at the intersections of political anthropology and the anthropology of religion. He is broadly interested in the politics of history, performances of public criticism, and varieties of Islamic practice in Turkey.

Ali Yaycioglu
Ali Yaycioglu is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Stanford University. His research centers on economic, political, and legal institutions and practices as well as social and cultural life in southeastern Europe and the Middle East during the Ottoman Empire.

Pre-doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Center welcomes applications from pre-doctoral students at the write-up stage and from post-doctoral scholars working in any of the four program areas of democracy, development, evaluating the efficacy of democracy promotion, and rule of law.
