About the Seminar: Following the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, foreign influence operations have been a growing topic of academic inquiry. Since then, a wave of research has examined how disinformation was used by foreign states, among others, to manipulate public opinion via social media. Researchers have documented how these campaigns have homed in on national issues and local communities, spreading disinformation to inflame debates about race and religion and deepen polarization across the political spectrum. One aspect of these operations that has received less attention is the gender dimensions of these campaigns.

This seminar will explore how foreign state actors engage in covert influence operations targeting feminist activists and journalists in the United States.

About the Speaker: Samantha Bradshaw is a postdoctoral fellow at CDDRL and the Digital Civil Society Lab.
