CDDRL International Development Fellowships 2017
The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to understanding and supporting Middle Eastern countries undergoing democratic transitions and committed to informing U.S. and international policymakers and the public of developments in those countries. TIMEP’s mission, through research and advocacy, is to uncover and support initiatives and voices – wherever they may be – that call for the following in the Middle East: Restoration and primacy of the rule of law; equality of all citizens before the law; access to fair and swift justice; respect for human rights, including freedom of expression and of religion; protection of civil and political liberties; expansion of women’s rights; youth empowerment; freedom of the media; balancing power within governments, and elections for public office that are free, fair, and contested openly in an environment of political pluralism. Additionally, TIMEP’s mission calls for support of the adoption of economic policies that responsibly harness and develop, rather than stifle or waste, the region’s human, natural and capital resources. The fellow will work under the mentorship and supervision of TIMEP Executive Director Nancy Okail, an alumnus of CDDRL’s Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program.

EU-Russia Civil Society Forum (Forum, or CSF) is a network of thematically diverse non-governmental organisations from Russia and the European Union, established as a bottom-up civic initiative, independent from governments, political parties and businesses. The goal of the Forum is to strengthen cooperation between civil society organisations and to contribute to the integration between Russia and the EU, based on common values of pluralistic democracy, rule of law, human rights and social justice. As of today, the Forum has 159 members – 62 from the EU, 83 from Russia, and 14 international organisations.
The selected fellow will work at the Secretariat of the EU-Russia Civil Society Forum. He/she will conduct research,draft memos, review legal documents, coordinating activities and communications to support the CSF Steering Committee. The fellow will work under the mentorship and supervision of the Forum's Executive Director Anna Sevortian, an alumna of the CDDRL's Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program.
Women Peace Network-Arakan mission is to build a peaceful Myanmar and Arakan by promoting democracy and human rights in Burma. The organization builds a platform for peace and understanding among Burma’s diverse ethnic groups by raising awareness through trainings on democracy, human rights, peace building, rule of law, researches and peace activities, campaigning and advocacy. The selected fellow would assist with a projects on human rights documentation and advocacy of minorities, particularly the Rohingya community through legal research, updating website, producing advocacy paper and documenting files. The fellow would also assist with teaching English classes during the weekend. The fellow will work under the mentorship and supervision of Executive Director Wai Wai Nu, an alumna of CDDRL’s Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program.
Description: Wasabi is a media and communications company dedicated to creating platforms for public debate, community building, and open expression, with a specialization in event management and video production. In particular, Wasabi specializes in engaging youth, women, and marginalized voices in public discourse. Wasabi has been active in Tunisia since 2013, running debate programs, capacity development initiatives, and media projects aimed at reaching youth and women. The selected fellow would support the LEAD program which aims to spur job creation, with a particular focus on women and youth, in Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Libya. The selected fellow will be working with Wasabi to support a network of entrepreneurs to launch coworking and entrepreneurship centers in regions outside of the capital Tunis as well as supporting a digital media campaign to encourage female entrepreneurship across North Africa. The selected fellow will work under the mentorship and supervision of the company’s CEO and Managing Director Houssem Aoudi, an alumna of CDDRL’s Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program.
Civil Network OPORA is a civil society organization that catalyzes change in Ukraine by engaging citizens in decision-making process, fights for the protection of voting rights and transparent electoral processes, advocates and provides assistance for implementation of good governance in the Ukrainian parliament as well promotes transparency in political processes. The selected fellow would assist in implementation of a project for increasing the transparency of political processes in Ukraine, reform of electoral law and development of analytical materials on best practices in election administration, electoral systems and proper work of political parties. The organization will engage selected fellow in preparation of analytical materials, execution of events, writing of articles and conduct of research on a wide range of topics about domestic reforms and geopolitical processes that have an impact on Ukraine. The selected fellow would support the political program under the mentorship and supervision of the Head of the Board, Olga Aivazovska, an alumna of CDDRL’s Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program.
